Intel unleashes ‘Lynnfield’ Core processors

Lynnfield CPUs feature an integrated dual-channel DDR3 memory, an integrated PCI-Express graphics controller and a Direct Media Interface which enables the chip to interface with the motherboard's chipset.

These CPUs also boast improved ‘Turbo Boost' technology, which enables individual CPU cores to run overclocked, to provide better performance under certain conditions. A Core i7-870 which normally runs at 2.93GHz will overclock itself to 3.6GHz if only one or two of its four cores are under load. If however all four cores are under load, Turbo Boost will overclock all four cores but to a lower frequency of 3.2GHz.

So far Intel has launched three Lynnfield processors; the Core i7 870, Core i7 860 and the Core i5 750. The new Core i7 chips can be distinguished from their higher-end counterparts via their model numbers; whereas Lynnfield Core i7 chips feature the 800 modeling scheme (860, 870 etc), the higher-end Core i7 models feature a 900 numbering scheme (920, 940 etc).

Beyond the model number differences the newer Lynnfield chips also feature a different CPU socket, known as LGA 1156, and require a motherboard featuring the Intel P55 Express chipset. This means the newer Lynnfield chips are not compatible with the vast number of existing LGA 1366 socket-based Intel X58 boards. Similarly, Core i7 LGA 1366 processors are not compatible with the LGA 1156 boards and Intel P55 Express chipset.

Lynnfield chips are currently produced using a 45nm manufacturing process though Intel has plans to produce these chips on the newer, smaller 32nm process in the near future.

The Radeon HD 4890 is essentially an overclocked version of the Radeon HD 4870 (GPU @ 750MHz and memory @ 3600MHz). The Radeon HD 4890 is meant to compete with NVIDIA.

Quite possibly my most disliked graphics card of 2009 was the Radeon HD 4890. Although the naming does suggest that the 4890 is not a great deal faster than the 4870 that was not what bothered us. Rather it was the fact that this newer slightly improved version cost anywhere from 20 – 30% more while providing just a few extra frames per second in most games.

With the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 selling for just $180 US in April when the Radeon HD 4890 was released, we found it hard to accept this new graphics card at $250 US. After all Radeon HD 4890 is in essence just an overclocked Radeon HD 4870 with far greater overclocking abilities. ATI fine-tuned the RV790 XT core allowing for incredible core frequencies.

Although the default core speed of 850MHz is a moderate bump over the 4870, many users are reporting overclocks in the order of 1GHz and beyond. Still despite the great overclocking abilities of the new Radeon HD 4890 we were not sold as the price premium was just too difficult to justify.

Furthermore Nvidia was able to swiftly counter the Radeon HD 4890 with what I considered at the time to be a better product, the GeForce GTX 275. As luck would have it, the GeForce GTX 275 was not just a quick and easy counter for the Radeon HD 4890, it was the perfect counter. Prior to the launch of these two cards the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 were already doing battle. The Radeon HD 4890 was meant to outclass both products and conquer the $250 price range but evidently that didn't go as planned.

Those familiar with overclocking will understand why it is important to use high-quality hardware components. While a typical computer system can often get away with an under rated power supply, generic memory and a low performance CPU cooler, those that are going to be overclocked certainly cannot make do with such average hardware. There are almost limitless options to choose from, should you venture into the land of after market computer parts. While there are quite a few good options out there to choose from, there are just as many that should be avoided.

There is a name that every overclocker will know and that is Corsair. For many years now Corsair has delivered the best overclocking hardware money can buy and their reputation is something they are very proud of. Initially Corsair was only known for their memory modules, which where geared strictly for performance. Today, Corsair offers a wide range of high-quality memory products from memory modules to flash drives. However, their product lines now extend well beyond just memory.

Back in the days of the early Pentium 4 and AthlonXP processors, overclocking was a lot more simplified in many ways. This was partly because power requirements were much lower and critical system components, such as the CPU and graphics card, generated significantly less heat. Computers these days require much more power and as a result operate at far greater temperatures, making overclocking a much trickier task than it once was. However, with the right combination of hardware, it is still very possible to achieve massive overclocking results.

Corsair knows all to well how vital the roll of various hardware components are in an overclocking situation. Since they are already the cream of the crop when it comes to memory modules, their next move was to solve the thermal issues overclocked systems encounter. They have done this to a certain degree with a number of water-cooling kits. The next step was to create a power supply that could match the might of their existing memory and cooling products. Well, that step has now been taken and the result is the Corsair CMPSU-620HX 620 watt power supply.

Hard Disk Drives

Pricing for harddrives has been relatively stable for more than 2 years. This trend is expected to continue. The exception is prices for disk capacities below 80 GB. These prices have fallen as demand has dropped.

SSD Drives are still more expensive than conventional HDD. An SSD Drive now costs about $2 per gigabyte while a HDD drive costs less than $1 per gigabyte. The price of an SSD continues to improve (SSD drives once sold for more than $25 per gigabyte), and with manufacturing volumes anticipated, the price difference should be further reduced.

SSDs are an ideal storage solution for netbooks. You can buy an 80 GB HDD for $30-$35, but that would only get you 15 GB of flash capacity. At the current technology node (42 nm), it is not possible to manufacture at $1/GB, but when the manufacturing node reaches 24 nm, this price looks feasible. Look for 24 nm volume production in 2011.

The first thing that caught my attention was the USB support. Most KVM's today control computers through the PS/2 ports for the keyboard and mouse, and this KVM also supports this traditional method. However, you can also control a USB-enabled computer through one of its USB ports from the KVM, even if your keyboard and mouse aren't of the USB breed! One distinct advantage of this is that it does simplify wiring a little. Instead of having to deal with two PS/2 connectors and the video cable, you just have a single USB cable and the video. Another feature that is unique to this KVM is the audio/microphone switching. This enables you share one set of speakers, and one mic with the up to four computers that are connected to the KVM. Other features that are notable are the firmware-upgrade capability that will give Belkin the ability to address any problems with the KVM's features and the 5-year warranty. The video bandwidth available seems to be more than adequate, but we'll see if any distortion to the video signal resulted from usage of the KVM. Although this unit does not require power, as it draws power from the PS/2 or USB ports of the computer(s) that are plugged into it, there is an option to use a 9v DC external source to power the KVM, though such an AC adapter is not included.

Installation

Installation is very simple. After all, a KVM has always been a hardware device that hasn't required any special software or drivers. For PS/2 installation, you simply power down the computer, disconnect your monitor, keyboard and mouse, and connect them to the console ports of the KVM. You then use a set of KVM cables to connect your computer to the KVM. Connecting a computer via USB to the KVM is a bit different. In this case, you must power on the computer, and then connect the KVM to the PC via USB. Most modern operating systems will detect the KVM and install the appropriate drivers. In the case of Windows 2000, it identified the KVM as two HID's; a mouse and a keyboard. You then power down that computer, and then connect your monitor to the KVM, and your PC's vidcard to the KVM. One thing to note is that while you can connect a PC to the KVM via USB, your keyboard and mouse must support PS/2.

Kodak ESP 3250 and 5250 printers unveiled

Kodak has just dropped us word of a couple printers - the ESP 3250 and ESP 5250 - which are on their way to the market. Both are inkjets, and all-in-ones, which mean that they don't just print - they also copy and scan.

Both models print, according to the company, up to 30 pages per minute in greyscale, and 29 pages per minute in colour. They've also both got paper trays that automatically adjust to the paper size you've got stuffed into them.

Where they differ, though, is in features. The 3250 has a 1.5-inch colour LCD and memory card slot. Whereas the 5250 has a 2.4-inch LCD and memory card capability, alongside built-in Wi-Fi for cable-less printing.

Both printers should be available shortly. The 3250 costs £90, and the 5250 will set you back more like £130. Ink costs £7 for black and £10 for five-ink colour.

Designed to be used with a laptop or any other device equipped with a USB port, the .Audio 550 DSP is one of a new breed that forgoes the traditional 3.5mm mini-stereo jack in place of a USB interface. This allows for easy plug-and-play setup with any USB enabled device, but eliminates the possibility of using the headset with a typical that uses a 3.5mm mini-stereo input. This is one area where the headset falls short – a headset that will be used for gaming, music listening would benefit greatly from a mini-stereo connection in addition to the USB connection.

With a long 10ft. cord the .Audio 550 DSP provides good mobility in terms of where you place your PC while using the headset. It also includes in-line volume control that provides good flexibility in terms of changing the volume level without having to access your PC or laptop. These pluses are counteracted by the fact that the .Audio 550 DSP is not very portable. The headset is not foldable and the in-line DSP module makes the whole package a bit more bulky than the average pair of headphones. Again, this limits the ways in which the headset can be used. It is primarily useful when you are at home using a desktop PC or laptop.

Overall, the design of the headphones is modern and attractive. Each side of the headset is covered in a glossy black casing that gives the unit a clean, sophisticated look. The small Plantronics logo that is used to decorate the side of each earcup does not distract from the sleek appearance of the headset. The earcups and the headband are made from a soft leatherette material that provides good cushioning against your ears and head, and the overall weight of the headset is surprisingly light.

XFX Radeon HD 5870 Review

Features and Design

The chip—codenamed Cypress—at the heart of the Radeon 5870 is manufactured using a 40nm process, the same technology that enabled AMD to build the very fast (for its price point) processor found we reviewed last June. But Cypress is more than twice as large as the GPU used in the 4770 (334 square millimeters, compared to 137 square millimeters), and this enabled AMD’s engineers to pack a staggering 2.15 billion transistors onto the chip. That transistor count, in turn, enabled them to build 1,600 stream processors in a single GPU.

As is common practice among video card manufacturers, XFX doesn’t stray far from AMD’s reference design with its first Cypress implementation. This card (XFX’s model number HD-587A-ZN, so you can differentiate it from the more souped-up SKUs that are sure to follow) runs the GPU at a core clock speed of 850 MHz and its 1GB of GDDR5 memory at 1.2GHz. GDDR5 memory delivers data four times each clock cycle, which gives it considerably more bandwidth than GDDR3 memory (which transfers data only twice per clock cycle). AMD integrated four 64-bit memory controllers into the chip, for an aggregate 256-bit memory interface.

As you might expect, the card is physically large (some PC enclosures will have trouble accommodating its 11-inch length), and it requires a dual-slot cooler. You’ll also need a minimum of a 500-watt power supply with two six-pin power cables to feed this beast (XFX provides four-to-six- pin adapter cables, in case you need them). But for all its power, this card is remarkably quiet, even under heavy loads—you needn’t worry about a noisy cooling fan intruding into stealth moments of your gaming sessions. The mounting bracket on XFX’s card is outfitted with two dual-link DVI outputs, one HDMI output, and one DisplayPort. Using some combination of the three will enable you to drive three 32-inch displays at their native resolution of 2560x1600 simultaneously.

If your PC’s motherboard has two x16 PCI Express slots and supports AMD’s CrossFire technology (that includes a large number of motherboards targeted at the build-your-own crowd, but a much smaller number of factory-built machines) you can run two of these cards in tandem for an even bigger performance boost. (You won’t necessarily see your frame rate double, but the increase should be significant).

Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound Card

Features and Design

Asus uses a Burr-Brown PCM1792A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that delivers up to 24-bits of resolution and sampling rates as high as 192kHz. Of course, if you examine the specs for the onboard audio solutions used in most these days, you’ll see the same numbers, so we have to look deeper for an explanation as to why this card sounds so delightful.

The answers are to be found in some of the card’s other specs, such as its signal-to-noise ratio, a measurement of the relationship between the strength of the desired signal and unwanted background noise (e.g., hum, hiss, and static). Everything else being equal, the higher the number the better, and the Xonar Essence STX’s numbers are very high indeed. Where the typical motherboard audio system delivers signal-to-noise ratio in the mid 80s, Asus claims its card delivers a signal-to-noise ratio of 124dB when driving speakers, and 117dB when driving headphones.

The Xonar Essence STX’s other specs are equally impressive, putting it in the range of pro audio gear: Broad dynamic range of 118dB, for instance, enables the card to more accurately reproduce the diversity of instrumental and vocal timbres that make great recordings so rich, full, and rewarding. And total harmonic distortion (THD) of just 0.0002 percent means that the music is all you hear. This is largely due to the use of effective shielding to stop electromagnetic interference from bleeding into the analog signal path.

Another feature that renders this unique is the presence of an onboard headphone amplifier (the well-regarded Texas Instruments TPA6120A2 chip), coupled with software that lets you adjust the amount of gain for that present different amounts of impedance, ranging from 0dB gain for headphones with less than 64 ohms of impedance (most consumer models fall into this category), to 12dB gain for headphones with 64- to 300 ohms of impedance, and 18dB gain for professional phones with 300 to 600 ohms of impedance.

The software does a lot of other things, too. You’ll find a host of environmental effects (concert hall, stadium, and the like), a programmable equalizer, and several DSP modes, including Dolby Virtual Speaker, Dolby Headphone, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx. We don’t find much joy in folding, spindling, and mutilating our favorite tunes, however, so we didn’t spend a lot of time with these geegaws.

Microsoft - Sidewinder Mouse Review

The first rule of Sidewinder Mouse? Download software from the Web. With no disc included in the otherwise comprehensive packaging, the bright startup guide is insistent that that's where you start. It's a 14MB download you need, and cleverly it's grouped with standard mice rather than the gaming menu under Microsoft's tree structure.

This, then, is Microsoft's long-promised re-entry into the PC gaming hardware sector, to which it made a token gesture with the release of an Xbox 360 gamepad for PC, but otherwise left alone since abandoning the original Sidewinder gaming line many years ago. The new Sidewinder Mouse is promised to be the first in a line-up of accessories aimed very much at the serious gamer.

As is clear when you examine this new rodent. It comes, for instance, with a separate box of weights that you can add and remove to customise it to the feel you desire. This box also doubles up as a cable anchor, so you can restrict the length of the USB lead with which the mouse attaches itself (this is a strictly wired rodent, which is just as gamers seem to like it).

Likewise, it supports one-click DPI readjustment, so you can easily make the device more or less sensitive using three buttons mounted into the centre of the unit. The default variables are 400, 800 and 2000dpi, although these can be configured using the software. A bonus is a small LED screen built into the mouse that tells you the current DPI setting, although this is more novelty than anything actually vital.

The software turns out to be something of a treasure trove. One of the features of the Sidewinder mouse is a 180-degree quick turn, highly useful in first person shooter games. Given that the Sidewinder has a left button, right button, quick launch button (with the Vista-only assignment of opening your games folder), DPI buttons, scroll wheel and two side buttons, you can assign one of these to the quick turn function in the aforementioned software and still have plenty left over.

One other fascinating addition is the ability to record a macro. Should you encounter a game where you need to occasionally repeat the same manoeuvre - a run and strafe, for instance, or consistently shooting at the same place to remove an obstacle - you can record a macro to memorise this, and a click of one of the chosen buttons will then perform the function for you.

It's a feature we've not found full use of yet - and we tested the mouse across a range of RTS and FPS games, none of which really required such a stringent repetition of an action - but we can still see its value in perhaps an RPG, where repetitive actions can be more prevalent.

Canon - PIXMA MX850 Review

This is Canon's top-of-the-range multifunction machine for the SOHO market. The PIXMA MX range differs from the MP range in offering four-colour print, though it provides a separate, pigmented black ink for printing black text, too.

The substantial MX850 - it's nearly as deep as it is wide - has a built-in Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) which, like the print engine, can operate on both sides of the paper in one job. This means you can perform duplex copying, to produce a two-sided copy of an original, though you'll have to wait for it.

We believe Canon still has trouble with the drying time of its inks as, every time it prints in duplex mode, it waits nearly 10 seconds between finishing the first side of each page and starting the second. A 20-side black text print job took just under nine minutes to complete and a 20-side copy took the best part of 10 minutes. These times are long enough to make busy people resort to single-sided printing and ignore any resource savings.

The machine itself follows Canon's usual sleek lines, styled in black and silver and with a comprehensive control panel running nearly the full width of its front. Controls include quick-dial buttons for the built-in fax facility, a number pad for phone dialling, a 62mm LCD display for previewing photos and an easy-to-use navigation ring, though without the supremely ergonomic click-dial of the high-end PIXMA MP machines.

As well as printing, scanning and copying, the MX850 can handle most memory card formats for direct photo printing and has a PictBridge socket if you prefer to connect your camera with a cable. There's also a facility for direct printing of CDs and DVDs, using a separate holder which slots in once you've pulled down a flap inside the all-in-one.

More conventional printing can come from a feed tray at the rear or a cartridge which slides in underneath, both of which can take up to 150 sheets of plain paper or 25 or so photo blanks. Print quality of both plain text and colour graphics is clean with little ink spatter, and photo images, while not as good in the lighter tints as from the six-colour PIXMA MP machines, are perfectly serviceable for day-to-day use.

Epson - Perfection V500 Photo Review

All-in-One printer/scanner/copier machines are all the rage at present, especially if you're trying to run a home office or small business on a fairly limited budget. However, the frustration for dedicated amateur and semi-pro photographers is that most multi-function machines manage to do several tasks reasonably well but none of them to a high enough degree of excellence.

For this reason, a dedicated photo scanner or printer will always appeal to the keen snapper who demands high quality reproductions. Epson has been aware of this for some time and its Perfection Photo series has concentrated on meeting this need for those who don't have huge amounts of money but have plenty of enthusiasm.

The main joy about the Perfection V500 Photo is that it caters for a wide range of standard and non-standard formats and it doesn't keep you hanging around before it starts scanning. It's designed to be visually cool in jet black with a silver strip around the middle. Controls are kept to the usual minimum: four one-touch buttons at the front for power and sending to PDF, e-mail and conventional printer, plus a USB 2.0 port at the back to connect to your PC.

The first thing you notice when you unpack the contents is that you have not one but two film holders. The first can contain up to twelve frames of 35mm film and a maximum of four 35mm transparencies, while the second will hold one frame of 6 x 12cm medium format film, a much neglected photographic format. Once inserted in the relevant holder, you align them next to the appropriate indicated letter on the document table and away you go. Using 6,400dpi optical resolution and 3.4 optical density, the results are impressive.

There have been two big improvements from the previous models in this series. The first is the use of ReadyScan LED technology (making it the first Charged-Coupled Device scanner to use white LED as a light source) which delivers faster scanning speeds, allows almost instant start-up (even when the machine has been idle for a while) and is low on power consumption.

Well believe it or not, that kid went to university putting 60 pounds of lean muscle to his 140lb 5' 7" frame after high-school and became the starting running back winning a couple Vanier cups and dating the entire cheerleading squad...twice. The saying "good things come in small packages" is the point of this story and the point of this motherboard.

The mATX form factor has really made a name for itself over the last few years and that has carried forward to the X58 chipset with fully featured monster boards packed into a small mATX form factor. The EVGA X58 SLI Micro continues that tradition offering pretty much everything its full ATX X58 counterparts provide. The one big difference is the mATX form factor. Measuring in at 2.5 inches shorter than the standard ATX form factor, the mATX X58 SLI Micro offers a multitude of options for smaller cases and creative HTPC systems.

We have a lot to look at with this board including a plethora of hardware to test fit. This list includes multiple video cards as well as the usual Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme test fitting session. We have a few kits of memory to test for XMP profile compatibility and a handful of CPU's to test in order to maximize every aspect of this little power house in the overclocking arena. Our expectations of the X58 SLI Micro are quite high having used the rest of the EVGA X58 lineup with great success. We will definitely find out if good things can indeed come in small packages.

As most of you are aware, Intel's mainstream have launched and motherboard manufacturers have overwhelmingly embraced this new platform.
